lAnthony is disabled from a childhood accident.
He has to go to school again in basic skills to relearn these things.
He was on parol at one point and just ran into him and he was saying about how far he has come. He also has a daughter that he is trying to raise. At this point we are not sure how he has a child because it is still unknown if he is married. It seems unlikely. The book starts out in a community college that is in an urban area.

to promote a better life style
From 2000- 2008 at least 5 million Americans fell into poverty.

- School gives you many opprtunities in life. Opportunities are a combination of circumstances favorable for the purpose, a fit time
- Many times when there is public speeches about school they do not say the right things. They talk about readiness and competiveness for school weather than how it can benefit you for the rest of your life and the important things that it can do for you.
- school is changed by techonology
- school failure= jobless, bad health care
- getting educated all the time, weather you realize it or not. It is impossible to live without being educated
- reasons to be educate:
1. to pass on knowledge
2. to prepare young for democratic life
3. to foster moral and intellectual growth
4. to enable individual and societal economic
prosperity


- What people think about school has a lot to do with what kind of area they live in. If they live in a bad area where the future doesn't look too good for them, they usually think negatively about school.
- " But knowledge gained in school became a source of pleasure and competence for me,enabled me to craft an identity and career..." pg. 66


- People tend to judge people's intelligence by the work they do but that is not always accurate. Just because someone does a job that doesn't involve much intelligence doesn't mean that they are not intelligent.

- Workers in this decade require skills such as:
1. Creative
2. Problem solving
3. Skilled in colaberation and communication
- a few decades ago just having employees' hands alone was needed
- Many young adults that are just coming out of school do not have the proper skill set that their job requires and many times do not have the correct problem solving ability
- young adults need to be in activities that require brain, action, and to reflect on that action


- overall, standards are just systematic means of telling teachers what the students need to learn.
